How does Generic Zyrtec work?
The active ingredient of generic Zyrtec is Cetirizine hydrochloride which belongs to a group of drugs called H1-histamine receptor blockers. The medication works by blocking H1 histamine receptors and thus helps to relieve the development of allergic reactions, possesses antipruritic and antiexudative action. The medication act on early histamine dependent stage of allergic reaction, prevents the release of inflammatory mediators, decreases the migration of eosinophils, neutrophils and basophills, stabilizes the migration of mast cell.
When Generic Zyrtec is prescribed?
Generic Zyrtec is prescribed for adults and children over 6 years of age for the treatment of seasonal and all year round allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis such as:
- Itching
- Sneezing
- Rhinorrhea
- Hyperemia of the conjunctiva
- Hay fever
- Hives including chronic idiopathic hives
- Quincke's edema
- Allergic dermatosis manifested in itching and skin rash
Before taking Generic Zyrtec
You should not take Generic Zyrtec if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any components of the medication
- Children under 6 years of age
Generic Zyrtec should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Severe liver diseases
- Severe kidney diseases
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Generic Zyrtec should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
How Generic Zyrtec is taken?
You should take Generic Zyrtec exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. You can take tablets with or without food.
In all year round allergic rhinitis patients should take generic Zyrtec all year long, patients with seasonal allergy should take the medicine during allergy season. Zyrtec tablets are taken orally washing down with sufficient amount of water. Do not crash or break tablets.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.
What should I do if I overdose?
Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Zyrtec dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: feeling restless or nervous, feeling drowsy.
Which Generic Zyrtec side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Generic Zyrtec. However, not everyone who takes Generic Zyrtec will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Generic Zyrtec tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Generic Zyrtec side effects:
- Central nervous system: drowsiness, headache, dizziness, migraine
- Digestive system: dry mouth, diarrhea

How Generic Zyrtec should be stored?
