How does generic Bactrim work?

Bactrim is a antibacterial preparation which contains 2 active ingredients sulfometoxazol and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole is similar to paraaminobenzoic acid which disturbs the production of folic acid in the bacteria. Without folic acid bacteria are not able to grow and replicate. Trimethoprim enhances the action of sulfametoxazole by inhibiting the reduction of dihydrofolic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid active form of folic acid (responsible for the protein metabolism and replication). Bactrim is a bactericidal antibiotic with a broad spectrum action.

When generic Bactrim is prescribed?

Treatment of infectious diseases caused by sensitive to the medication microorganisms:

  • Infections of the airways
  • ENT infections
  • Urogenital infections
  • Gonorrhea
  • Digestive system infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Before taking generic Bactrim

You should not take generic Bactrim if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Severe liver damage
  • Kidney failure (cratinine clearance less than 15ml/min)
  • Severe blood diseases
  • Hyperbilirubinemia in children
  • Deficiency of G6PD
  • Hypersensitivity to the medication ingredients
  • Hypersensitivity so sulfonamides

You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Bactrim dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: lack of appetite, intestinal colic, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, confusion, fever, hematuria, crystalluria.

As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking generic Bactrim . However, not everyone who takes generic Bactrim will experience side effects.
