How does Singulair work?

Singulair is an antileukotriene medication for the treatment of bronchial asthma, a selective antagonist of leukotriene D4-receptors. The drug inhibits cysteinyl-leukotriene receptors in airways epithelium, demonstrating the ability to inhibit bronchoconstriction due to inhalation of cysteinyl-leukotriene LTD4 in patients with bronchial asthma.

Singulair (montelukast) induces bronchodilation within 2 hours after the intake and may complement bronhodilation caused by beta2-adrenoceptor agonists.

When Singulair is prescribed?

Singulair (montelukast) is intended for prevention and long-term treatment of bronchial asthma (prevention of attacks, basic therapy of mild and moderate asthma) in children and adults , including:

  • prevention of asthma symptoms in the daytime and nighttime;
  • treatment of asthmatic patients sensitive to aspirin (aspirin asthma, asthmatic triad);
  • prevention of bronhrospasms (bronchospastic reactions) caused by physical overload.

Before taking Singulair

You should not take Singulair if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • hypersensitivity to any component of the drugs
  • children aged 6 years and less

Montelukast should be used with caution in the following conditions:

  • severe kidney insufficiency
  • phenylketonuria

Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Use of Singulair in pregnant women has not been studied, therefore it should be used only if clearly needed.

It is not known whether montelukast is excreted with the breast milk, therefore breastfeeding women need to be cautious.

How Singulair is taken?

You should take Singulair exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, do not take the double dose if it is almost time for your next dose.

What should I do if I overdose?

No special information about Singulair overdose is available, therefore symptomatic treatment should be applied. The main symptoms of overdose are thirst, somnolence, mydriasis, hyperkinesis, and abdominal pain.

Which Singulair side effects are possible while the treatment?

As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Singulair. However, not everyone who takes Montelukast will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Montelukast tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Singulair side effects:

  • Allergic reactions: rash, itching, hives
  • CNS: headache, unusual vivid dreams, hallucinations, drowsiness, irritability, agitation including aggressive behavior, fatigue, suicidal thoughts and suicidal behavior, insomnia, paraesthesia/hypoesthesia
  • Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
  • Locomotor system: arthralgia, myalgia, including muscle cramps

Which other medicines can interact with Singulair?

  • Anticonvulsants

Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.

How Singulair should be stored?

Store at room temperature (15-30 ° C) in a dry place protected from light. Keep the drug out of reach of the children.
