How does Celexa work?
Celexa is an antidepressant that possesses a minimal sedative effect. The drug selectively inhibits neuronal serotonin reuptake in the brain. Citalopram normalizes the emotional sphere, improves the pathologically altered mood, eliminates depression or melancholy. Celexa stimulates motor activity and accelerates the processes of thinking during depression. The antidepressant effect of citalopram usually develops after 2-4 weeks of treatment.
When Celexa is prescribed?
Citalopram is used in adults during the following health states:
- Depression of various etiologies and structure;
- Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia;
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder;
Before taking Celexa
You should not take Citalopram if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Idiosyncrasy (including a history of hypersensitivity) to any component of Celexa;
- Concomitant administration of inhibitors of monoamine oxidase, Sumatriptan and other Serotoninergic means as well as within 14 days after the termination of their admission
- Mania, hypomania
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Celexa should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Presence of drug dependence (including history)
- Liver and / or renal failure
- Seizures
- Elderly age
- Child age
How Celexa is taken?
Take Celexa exactly as it was prescribed. To clarify the indications for use, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Take each dose with a full glass of water (200 milliliters).
In order to accurately measure out a dose, use dimensional spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon.
Celexa can be taken with or without food.
Typically, the drug is taken once a day. Follow your doctor's instructions. Take the medicine every day and the same time.
Do not stop taking Celexa without consulting your doctor. Improvement can occur after few weeks.
You should take Citalopram exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Missed dose should be administered as soon as you remember. However, if you should already take the next dose according to the time, skip the missed dose and the next one.
What should I do if I overdose?
Seek medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of a Celexa overdose include nausea, vomiting, tremors, drowsiness, dizziness, sweating and heart palpitations.
Which Celexa side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Celexa. However, not everyone who takes Citalopram will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Citalopram tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Celexa side effects:
Immediately stop taking Celexa and consult a doctor if you experience any of the following serious side effects:
- Allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, hives);
- Irregular heartbeating or pulse;
- Low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness);
- High blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision), or chills or fever (fever).
If you experience less serious side effects, continue taking Celexa and consult with your doctor:
- Headache, tremor, nervousness, or agitation;
- Nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, changes in weight or appetite;
- Drowsiness or insomnia,
- Decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty in achieving orgasm.

Which other medicines can interact with Celexa?
Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.

How Celexa should be stored?
The medication should be stored at temperatures not above 25 C. Keep in places inaccessible to children.
Additional information
You should not share this medicine with others. Do not take Citalopram on your own initiative without your doctors approval. Keep the drug as well as any other disposable material out of the reach of children.
