How does generic Prozac work?

Generic Prozac is an antidepressant which belongs to a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs for short. By inhibiting serotonin reuptake Fluoxetine increases the amount of serotonin (neurotransmitter) in the synaptic gap. This helps to normalize neurotransmission and relieve depression symptoms. The medication does not act on choline, adreno- and histamine- receptors.

When Prozac is prescribed?

Generic Prozac is prescribed in:

  • Depression
  • Bulimia
  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

When used in combination with Zyprexa, Fluoxetine is indicated in:

  • Depression associated with bipolar disorder
  • Treatment-resistant depression

Before taking Prozac

You should not take Prozac if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the drugs ingredients
  • Bipolar disorders
  • History of suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Severe liver diseases
  • Severe kidney diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Seizures
  • History of heart attacks and strokes
  • Glaucoma
  • Atony of the urinary bladder
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Prozac should be used with caution in the following conditions:

  • Anny allergies to foods, drugs, herbal supplements.

Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

  • The medication is contraindicated for pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers.

How Prozac is taken?

You should take Prozac exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. Be advised that it may take several weeks to fill the beneficial effect of fluoxetine. If the medication makes you drowsy, try to take it before bedtime. You can take the medication with or without food at the same time each day. Generic Prozac tablets should be taken whole swallowing with sufficient amount of water.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

What should I do if I overdose?

Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Prozac dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: nausea, vomiting, fever, sleepiness, increased heart rates, confusion, fainting, seizures, or coma.

Which Prozac side effect are possible while the treatment?

As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Prozac. However, not everyone who takes Prozac will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Prozac tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Prozac side effects:

How Prozac should be stored?

Prozac tablets should be stored at room temperature (18-25C). Protect from light. Do not store in the bathroom.
