How does Lexapro work?
Lexapro is antidepressants which belongs to a group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. The inhibiting of serotonin reuptake leads to increase of this neurotransmitter in the synaptic gap, enhance and prolong its effect on post-synaptic receptors. This in its turn helps to relieve the symptoms of depression.
Escitalopram does not possess an ability to bind to 5-HT1A-, 5-HT2 serotonin receptors, dopamine D1- and D2- receptor, 1-, 2-, - adrenoreceptors.
When Lexapro is prescribed?
Lexapro is approved to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
Before taking Lexapro
You should not take Lexapro if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Patients under 18 years of age
- Severe liver diseases
- Severe kidney diseases
- Bipolar disorders
- History of suicide thoughts or attempts
- Diabetes
- Seizures
Lexapro should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Alcohol abuse
- Moderate renal or hepatic failure
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Lexapro (escitalopram) is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
How Lexapro is taken?
You should take Lexapro exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. In most cases the recommended dosage of the medication is 10mg once daily. Escitalopram is taken orally swallowing with sufficient amount of water. Do not chew, crash or split the tablets.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.
What should I do if I overdose?
Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Lexapro dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, coma, seizures, low blood pressure.
Which Lexapro side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Lexapro. However, not everyone who takes Lexapro will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Lexapro tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Lexapro side effects:
- Orgasm problems
- Constipation

Escitalopram tablets should be stored at room temperature (18-25C). Protect from light. Do not store in the bathroom.
