How does generic Diflucan work?

Generic Diflucan contains the active ingredient fluconazole which belongs to a group of triazole anti-mycotic drugs. Fluconazole works by inhibiting the enzyme 14- dimethylase which is responsible for ergosterol production in the fungal cells. Ergosterol is a component of fungal cell membranes, serving the same function that cholesterol serves in animal cells. The interfering with ergosterol production increase the permeability of fungal cell. This is ultimately fatal for the microorganisms.

When Generic Diflucan is prescribed?

Generic Diflucan is prescribed for the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Candidiasis
  • Candida infections of the mucous linings of the oral cavity, urogenital system, throat, lungs, blood, genitals
  • Deep endemic mycosis
  • Fungal infections caused by Cryptococcus fungi (cryptococcosis), including cryptococcal meningitis and infections affecting the lungs or skin.
  • Preventing fungal infections caused by fungi in patients with a weakened immunity and low white blood cell counts due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or bone marrow transplants.
  • Prophylaxis of a disease caused by Cryptococcus fungi, eg cryptococcal meningitis, in patients with AIDS.

Before taking Diflucan

You should not take Diflucan if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Severe liver diseases
  • Severe kidney diseases
  • Cardiovascular diseases including irregular heart rhythm
  • Prolonged QT interval
  • Electrolyte imbalance

Diflucan should be used with caution in the following conditions:

  • Other allergies to food or drugs
  • Prolonged kidney failure

Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

The medication is contraindicated for use drugs pregnancy and breastfeeding

How Diflucan is taken?

You should take Diflucan exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. The dose of the medication depends on the type and severe of the infection treated. The medication should be taken whole with sufficient amount water. Do not chew, crash or split the tablets. Try to take the medication at the same time each day to maintain the constant level of the medication your blood.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time. For the treatment of vaginal yeast infection it is usually sufficient 1 dose of 150mg Fluconazole.

What should I do if I overdose?

Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Diflucan dosage higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: unusual thoughts and behavior

Which Diflucan side effects are possible while the treatment?

As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Diflucan. However, not everyone who takes Diflucan will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Diflucan tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Diflucan side effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Dizziness
  • Taste changes

Other side effects include: signs of liver damage, arrhythmia, seizures

This is not a complete list of Diflucan side effects. When side effects do occur make sure to inform your health care provider.

  • Benzodiazepines

Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.

How Diflucan should be stored?

Diflucan should be stored at room temperature (18-25C). Protect from light. Do not store in the bathroom.
