How does Mevacor work?
The preparation belongs to group of drugs called statins and works by inhibiting HMG-CoA-reductaze an enzyme which affects the production of the cholesterol in the body. The preparations overall effect consists in decrease in concentration of LDL, VLDL and triglycerides , moderately increases the concentration of HDL. The expressed therapeutic effect may be monitored within 2 weeks after the beginning of the treatment, the maximum therapeutic effect however is reached within 4-6 weeks.
When Lovastatin is prescribed?
The preparation is used in treatment of the following diseases:
- Primary hypercholesterolemia with increased concentrations of LDL type IIa and IIb
- Combined hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia
- Correction of lipid profile in patients with uncomplicated diabetes type I and II
- Hyperlipoproteinemia
- Atherosclerosis
Before taking Mevacor
You should not take Lovastatin if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparations
- Acute liver disease
- Increased activity of liver enzymes
- Severe liver failure
- Pregnancy
- Lactation period
- Young age
Mevacor should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Liver disease
- Chronic alcoholism
- Organ transplantation
- Chronic liver failure
- Concomitant immunosuppressive therapy
- Urgent surgery including stomatological
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
The preparation is contraindicated during pregnancy or lactation period as it may be harmful to the fetus or the newborn child.
How Lovastatin is taken?
You should take Mevacor exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
In cases of missed dosage the preparation should be taken as soon as possible, however if it is already time for the next administration the dosage must not be doubled, and the missed dosage may be forfeited.
What should I do if I overdose?
Please contact your health care provider immediately. There is no specific antidote in treatment of Lovastatin overdose, simple stomach cleaning procedures may be efficient in some cases. Monitoring of the patients condition is indicated.
Which Lovastatin side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Mevacor. However, not everyone who takes Lovastatin will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Mevacor tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Lovastatin side effects:
- Gastrointestinal tract: heartburn, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, meteorism, xerostomia, change of taste, decreased appetite, gastralgia, cholestatic jaundice, liver failure, hepatitis, acute pancreatitis.
- CNS: dizziness, headache, asthenia, insomnia, seizures, paresthesia, mental disorders
- Locomotor system: myalgia, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, myositis
- Haemopoietic organs: hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
- Sensory organs: blurred vision, lentoid opacity, cataract, visual nerve atrophy
- Allergic reactions
- Other: decreased libido, acute liver failure, chest pain, increased heart rate

Which other medicines can interact with Lovastatin?
- Anticoagulants
- Immunosuppressors
- Antibiotics especially macrolides

Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.
How Mevacor should be stored?
The preparation should be stored in temperatures varying from 5 to 30C. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Should be kept away from children.

You should not share this medicine with others. Do not take Lovastatin on your own initiative without your doctors approval. Keep the drug as well as any other disposable material out of the reach of children.
