How does Pravachol work?
The drug belong to a group of substances called statins which work by inhibiting HMG CoA-reducatase an enzyme that normally participates in the synthesis of cholesterol in the body. The preparation also increases metabolism and clearance of LDL and slows the production of VLDL in the liver.
When Pravastatin is prescribed?
The preparation is indicated in treatment of:
- Hyperlipidemia
- Atherosclerosis
- II type hyperlipidemia
- Familial hypercholesterolemia
Before taking Pravachol
You should not take Pravastatin if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
- Liver disease or liver failure
- Age prior to 18 years
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
The drug should not be used during pregnancy or lactation period dur to possible risks for the fetus or the newborn child.
How Pravastatin is taken?
You should take Pravachol exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
In cases of missed dosage the preparation should be taken as soon as possible, however if it is already time for the next administration the dosage must not be doubled, and the missed dosage may be forfeited.
What should I do if I overdose?
There is nos specific antidote for the Pravastatin overdose. Treatment is symptomatic. Call you doctor immediately after the incident.
Which Pravastatin side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Pravachol. However, not everyone who takes Pravastatin will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Pravachol tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Pravastatin side effects:
- CNS: change of taste, nistagm, oaresis of the facial nerve, tremor, dizziness,, insomnia, depression, amnesia, paresthesia
- Gastrointestinal tract: nausea, pancreatitis, hepatitis, fat infiltration,liver cirrhosis and necrosis, anorexia
- Locomotor system: myopathy, artralgia, rhabdomyolysis
- Hormonal system: gynecomastia, decreased libido
- Sensory organs: cataract, ophthalmoplegia,
- Allergic reactions
