How does Zocor work?
Simvastatin is a hypolipidemic drug. The preparation works by affecting the HMG-CoA-reductase, thus affecting the primary stage of cholesterol synthesis. The preparation decreases the concentration of VLDL, LDL, triglycerides in blood. And also slightly elevates the concentration of good cholesterol- HDL.
When Simvastatin is prescribed?
The preparation is normally indicated in treatment of:
- Coronary heart disease different indications
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Coronary atherosclerosis
- Heart attack prophylaxis
Before taking Zocor
You should not take Simvastatin if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Liver disease in active stage
- Pregnancy
- Lactation period
- Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug
- Increased activity of liver transaminase
- Known myopathy
- Young age in children and adolescents
Zocor should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Alcoholism
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- Avoid getting pregnant or breastfeeding during the treatment with Zocor.
How Simvastatin is taken?
You should take Zocor exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
In cases of missed dosage the preparation should be taken as soon as the patient remembers, however if it is the time for the next dose the patient should skip the missed dosage and resume the usual schedule. The preparation should not be used in double dosages.
What should I do if I overdose?
In cases of overdose the preparation symptomatic treatment is initiated. No specific antidote for the preparation exists.
Which Simvastatin side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Zocor. However, not everyone who takes Simvastatin will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Zocor tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Simvastatin side effects:
- Gastrointestinal tract: abdominal pain, constipation, meteorism, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, pancreatitis, nausea, jaundice, hepatitis
- CNS and peripheral nervous system: headaches, dizziness, seizures, paresthesia, peripheral neuropathy
- Allergic reactions
- Dermatological reactions: rash, itching, alopecia
- Locomotor system: Asthenia, myalgia, rhabdomyolysis, myopathy
- Other: anemia

Which other medicines can interact with Simvastatin?
- Anticoagulants
- Cytostatic
- Antimycotics
- Other hypolipidemic drugs
- Vitamins especially vitamin PP
Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.
How Zocor should be stored?
The preparation should be kept at temperatures lower then 30C, avoid temperatures near 50C.
