- Atenolol
How does generic Tenormin work?
Generic Tenormin contains the active ingredient atenolol that belongs to cardioselective beta1-adreno blocker. Tenormin exerts antihypertensive, antianginal and antiarrhythmic action. By blocking beta1-receptors Tenormin prevents the stimulating effects of catecholamines on the heart tissue and blood vessels. Atenolol possesses a negative chrono-, dromo-, batmo-, and inotropic action: decreases heart rate, inhibits the excitability and conductibility, lowers myocardium contractility. At the beginning of treatment Atenolol increases peripheral resistance, however in prolonged use peripheral resistance is decreased. Hypotensive effect is related to decreasing of minute blood volume and reducing the activity of renin-angiotensin system, sensitivity of baroreceptors of the aortic arch and CNS activity. Atenolol decreases systolic and diastolic blood pressure, decreases systolic volume, minute volume.
