How does Proscar work?
Generic Proscar contains the active ingredient finasteride which belongs to a group of medications called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. 5-alpha-reductase is an enzyme responsible for conversion of testosterone into dehydrotestosterone. Propecia works by decreasing the amount of DHT in the blood and tissue of the prostate gland. Finasteride normalizes the size of the prostate gland, relieves the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
When Proscar is prescribed?
Generic Proscar (Finasteride) is indicated for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (with aim to decrease the size of the prostate gland and relieve the symptoms associated with hyperplasia)
Before taking Proscar
You should not take Propecia if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
- Liver diseases
- Kidney diseases
- Obstructive uropathy
- Decreased amount of ejaculation
- Women
- Children and adolescents under 18 years of age
Proscar should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Severe hepatic failure
- Severe renal failure
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
The medication is not intended for use in women
How Proscar is taken?
You should take Propecia exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. The recommended dose of male pattern baldness is only 5mg once daily. The medication should be taken whole swallowing with sufficient amount of water. Do not chew, crash and split the tablets.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.
What should I do if I overdose?
Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Proscar dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: dyspepsia, headache, dizziness.
Which Proscar side effects are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Proscar. However, not everyone who takes Proscar will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Proscar tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Proscar side effects:
- Pain in the testicles
- Erectile dysfunction
- Decreased libido
- Ejaculation problems
- Pain in the mammary glands
- Allergic reactions such as skin rash, hives, angioedema
- Depression
- Acne

How Proscar should be stored?
Proscar tablets should be stored at room temperature (18-25 C). Protect from light. Do not store in the bathroom.
