How does Celecoxib work?

Celecoxib belongs to a group of medicines called NSAID's. Celecoxib possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic action. Celecoxib works by blocking the production of inflammatory prostaglandins due to inhibiting the enzyme COX-2 (cyclooxygenase type 2). The induction of COX-2 takes place in response to inflammatory process and leads to synthesis and accumulation of Ig (in particular Е2) resulting in inflammation enhancement (edema and pain).

When Celecoxib is prescribed?

  • Generic Celecoxib is prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis
  • Pain syndrome (back pain, bone, muscle and postoperative pain of moderate severity.
  • Treatment of primary dysmenorrhea

Before taking Celecoxib

You should not take Celecoxib if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Bronchial asthma, hives and allergic reactions to celecoxib and other NSAID's
  • Condition after coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • Stomach and duodenal ulcers
  • Gastrointestinal bleedings
  • Inflammatory diseases of the intestine
  • Cardiac failure
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Inflammatory diseases of the intestine
  • Severe liver failure
  • Severe kidney failure
  • Diseases of the peripheral blood vessels
  • Cerebrovascular diseases
  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredient
  • Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides

Celecoxib should be used with caution in the following conditions:

Stomach ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori, water retention, liver dysfunction, cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes, somatic diseases, simultaneous use with other medications, high lipid blood levels, dislipidemy.

Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

The medication is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding,

How Celecoxib is taken?

You should take Celecoxib exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. It is recommended to take tablets at the same time each day with food. Tablets should be taken with sufficient amount of water swallowing whole . Do not crash, split and chew the tablets.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

What should I do if I overdose?

Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Celecoxib dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, shallow breathing, fainting, or coma.

Which Celecoxib side effect are possible while the treatment?

As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Celecoxib. However, not everyone who takes Celecoxib will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Celecoxib tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Celecoxib side effects:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (such as the common cold)
  • Upper abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Nausea
  • Cough

Other Celecoxib side effects include: dizziness, meteorism, irritation in the nasal cavity, dizziness, sore throat, vomiting, GERD.

This is not a complete list of Celecoxib side effects. When side effects do occur make sure to inform your health care provider.

Which other medicines can interact with Celecoxib?

  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers
  • Diuretics (water pills)
  • Other NSAID's
  • Blood thinners
  • Aspirin
  • Antimycotics
  • Lithium preparations

Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.

How Celecoxib should be stored?

Celecoxib tablets should be stored at room temperature (18-25°C). Protect from light. Do not store in the bathroom.
