How does Imitrex work?

Imitrix contains the active ingredient Sumatriptan which belongs to a group of medicines called 5HT receptors agonists (triptans). Action mechanism of sumatriptan is associated with stimulating of 5HT receptors in the cerebral blood vessels. The stimulation of 5HT causes blood vessels to narrow. During a migraine blood vessels are usually dilates. By narrowing them Imitrex helps to relieve migraine symptoms.

When Imitrex is prescribed?

Before taking Imitrex

You should not take Imitrex if any of these conditions apply to you:

  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy or a history of seizures
  • Depression
  • High cholesterol
  • Cardiovascular diseases especially a history of heart disease, angina, an irregular heart rhythm, or a heart attack, mini stroke, cerebral bleedings, high blood pressure
  • The diseases of the peripheral blood vessels such as vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Kidney dysfunction

Imitrex should be used with caution in the following conditions:

  • Smoking
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Kidney dysfunction

Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

  • The medication is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding

How Imitrex is taken?

You should take Imitrex exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription. The medication is taken orally with sufficient amount of fluid swallowing whole. Do not chew or crash the tablets. Imitrex tablets should be taken as soon as possible once your migraine attacks begin. If the symptoms of migraine does not pass away you may use another one Imitrex dose. Do not taken than 2 doses of Imitrex at the same time. You can take the medication with or without food.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Maxalt is not meant to be taken on a daily basis. Take Imitrex only when you have a migraine.

What should I do if I overdose?

Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Imitrex dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include:

  • Seizures
  • Shakiness
  • Paralysis
  • Swelling in the arms or legs
  • Wide or dilated pupils
  • Increased saliva and watery eyes.

Which Imitrex side effect are possible while the treatment?

As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Imitrex. However, not everyone who takes Imitrex will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Imitrex tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Imitrex side effects:

Abnormal sensations, including tingles, warmth or burning, pressure, tightness, or numbness

  • Dizziness or a spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Flushing
  • Chest tightness or pressure
  • Weakness
  • Drowsiness
  • Neck pain
  • Sweating
  • Ear, nose, or throat discomfort
  • Drowsiness
  • Muscle pain or cramps
  • Anxiety
  • Stomach pain
  • Problems with swallowing
  • Jaw pain
  • Decreased salivation

This is not a complete list of Imitrex side effects. When side effects do occur make sure to inform your health care provider.

Which other medicines can interact with Imitrex?

  • Antidepressant
  • Ergot preparations
  • MAO inhibitors
  • Other migraine medication (triptans)

Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.

How Imitrex should be stored?

Imitrex tablets should be stored at room temperature (18-25°C). Protect from light. Do not store in the bathroom.

You should not share this medicine with others. Do not take Imitrex on your own initiative without your doctors approval. Keep the drug as well as any other disposable material out of the reach of children.
