What is acne?
Acne is a dermatological diseases which is caused by the inflammation and dysfunction of the fatty glands in the skin. Pimples are observed in most people beginning from adolescence age. Acne development is closely related to the functional condition of hormonal system. Hormones affect the activity and work of sebaceous glands as well as production of sebum. The inflammation associated with acne is caused by the pathogenic bacteria located on the skin surface.
Why do pimples occur?
There is not a single cause of acne. The main pathogenic mechanism consists in:
- enhanced production of sebum by the sebasceous glands
- congestion of follicle
The activity of sebasceous glands is significantly increased in puberty. Androgens enhance the production of new cells in the oil glands and follicle (keratinization). The masses of keratine and cells mixed with sebum may plug up the entrance of follicle causing a camedon.
There are different types of acne which include: whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts. The most common of are whiteheads and blackheads. Whiteheads are closed plugged follicles which produce white bump. Blackheads are are opened follicles with black discharges.
How acne is treated?
Successful acne treatment include medications and appropriate skin care. Acne medication are divided into several groups. For mild and moderate acne you may use over-the-counter medications which contain Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, resorcinol, azelaic acid(skinoren), Zynerit.
If you have severe acne you have to consult your health care provide on your treatment option. You doctor may prescribe you Accute(isotretionin) if you not pregnant, planning to become or breastfeeding. Accutane possesses a high therapeutic effect against acne ,however, it causes damage of the fetus exerting teratogenic effect.
Acne skin care includes some important principles which will help to control your acne:
- Clean your skin gently
- Avoid a sunburn
- Shave yourself carefully
