How does generic Prilosec work?
Omeprazole belongs to a group of anti-acidic drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Omeprazole works by inhibiting the enzyme Н+К+АТP-ase (proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach and in this way blocks the final stage of hydrochloric acid synthesis. This leads to lowering the level of basal and stimulating secretion independently on the irritant origin. After oral administration the effect of omeprazole is achieved in 2 hours and lasts within 24 hours.
When generic Prilosec is prescribed?
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
- Reflux esophagitis
- Erosive-ulcerous damage of the stomach and duodenum associated with application of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, stress ulcers
- Erosive-ulcerous damage of the stomach and duodenum associated with Helicobacter pylori
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Before taking generic Prilosec
You should not take generic Prilosec if any of these conditions apply to you:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
Generic Prilosec should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Severe liver diseases including liver failure and cirrhosis
- Kidney diseases including renal failure
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
The medication should not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding
How generic Prilosec is taken?
You should take generic Prilosec exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
For the treatment of Helicobacter pylori eradication Omeprazole is used in combination with antibiotics such as clarithromycin and amoxicillin. The medication should be taken with sufficient amount of water swallowing whole. Do not crash or chew the tablets. It is recommended to take the medication before meal on empty stomach. The medication should be taken at the same time each day. This will help to maintain the constant level of the medication in your blood.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.
What should I do if I overdose?
Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken generic Prilosec dosage much higher than recommended. The symptoms of overdose include: vision disorders, drowsiness, headache, increased sweating, dry mouth, tachycardia.
Which generic Prilosec side effect are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking generic Prilosec. However, not everyone who takes generic Prilosec will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking generic Prilosec tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following generic Prilosec side effects:
- Digestive system: diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, dry mouth, taste changes, stomatitis, increased level of liver enzymes
- CNS: headache, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, paresthesia, depression, hallucinations.
- Locomotor system: muscle weakness, myalgia, arthralgia
- Hemopoietic system: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia
- Skin: hives, itching
- Other: vision problem, peripheral edema, increased sweating, fever, gynecomastia
