How does Zyban work?
Zyban is a smoking cessation drug, which besides the motivational support helps quit smoking. Zyban does not contain nicotine. The medicine belongs to a class of atypical antidepressants, thus is it able to reduce the withdrawal symptoms like irritability and anxiety.
When Zyban is prescribed?
Zyban is indicated as an aid to smoking cessation treatment.
Before taking Zyban
You should not take Zyban if any of these conditions apply to you:
- hypersensitivity to Zyban or any component of the medicine
- epilepsy, seizures (incl. history)
- CNS neoplasms
- eating disorders
- acute liver cirrhosis
- bipolar disorder
- children
Bupropion should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- heart diseases
- kidney and/or liver disorders
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding:
It is not known whether this medication is harmful to an unborn baby. Before taking Zyban, tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during the treatment. Bupropion passes into breast milk and could be harmful to a nursing baby. Do not take Zyban without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How Zyban is taken?You should take Bupropion exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of Zyban, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
What should I do if I overdose?In case of overdose seek immediate medical assistance. The symptoms of the Zyban overdose may include seizures, fainting, irregular heartbeat.
Which Zyban side effects are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Bupropion. However, not everyone who takes Zyban will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Zyban tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Bupropion side effects:
- dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation
- insomnia, dizziness, tremors
- asthenia, fever
- agitation, depression, irritability
- sweating, blurred vision
- weight loss or gain, appetite changes
- low libido
- allergic reactions: rash, itching, etc.
This is not a complete list of Bupropion side effects. When side effects do occur make sure to inform your health care provider.
Which other medicines can interact with Zyban?
Zyban may interact with the following groups of drugs:
- cancer treatment
- CYP2B6 and CYP2D6 inhibitors
- other anti-depressants
- anticonvulsants
Make sure to inform your health care provide about prescription and over-the-counter medication, herbal supplements, and other medical preparations you are currently taking. Do not begin a new medication without letting your doctor know.
How Zyban should be stored?
Keep Zyban out of reach of children away from direct sunlight. Store the drug at a room temperature (below 25 C).

You should not share this medicine with others. Do not take Bupropion on your own initiative without your doctors approval. Keep the drug as well as any other disposable material out of the reach of children.
