How does Cytomel work?
Liothyronine is an isomer of thyroid gland hormone Triiodothyronine. The drug works by replenishing the deficiency of thyroid hormones in cases of hypothyroidism. The overall effects of the preparation are: increase in consumption of oxygen by the tissues, stimulates growth and differentiation, improves basic metabolism. Over effect of the drug includes suppression of Thyriotropic hormone production.
When Liothyronine is prescribed?
The drug is prescribed in treatment of:
- Hypothyroidism
- Myxoedema
- Cretinism
- Hypothyroid obesity
- Thyroid gland cancer
- Endemic and sporadic goiter
Before taking Cytomel
You should not take Liothyronine if any of these conditions apply to you:
Hypersensitivity to any components of the preparation
- Thyreotoxicosis
- Ischemic heart disease
- Myocarditis
- Adrenal gland insufficiency
- Cachexy
Cytomel should be used with caution in the following conditions:
- Tachycardia
- Tachyarrhythmia
- Heart failure
- Diabetes
- Elderly age
Application during pregnancy and breastfeeding: The drug should be used with caution during pregnancy.
How Liothyronine is taken?
You should take Cytomel exactly as indicated by your physician. Do not exceed recommended dosages. Follow the directions of your prescription.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
You should take the medication as soon as possible. If its already time to your next dose, you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.
What should I do if I overdose?
Seek immediate medical attention if you have taken Cytomel is dosages much higher than recommended.
Which Liothyronine side effects are possible while the treatment?
As with any drug, there are some side effects while may occur while taking Cytomel. However, not everyone who takes Liothyronine will experience side effects. In fact, most patients taking Cytomel tolerate it well. During clinical trials there were reported the following Liothyronine side effects:

- Heart failure
